Jan Vertonghen was sorely missed at Spurs last season. That's not to say he didn't play for the club in 2013-14, it's just that, when he did, he looked completely disinterested and like he wanted to be anywhere but playing for Spurs. He did miss the second half of the season through injury, but it was suggested that, once he was fit towards the end of the season, he wasn't in the right place mentally to take to the field. That all seems to be behind him now and, after a good World Cup, he's said to be happy at Spurs and on the verge of signing a new contract (despite interest from the likes of Barcelona), which is great news for the Lilywhites. Vertonghen is an outstanding defender and was one of the best performers in the Premier League in the season before last. If he can rediscover that kind of form, Spurs' leaky defence of last year should receive a timely and very welcome boost.
