Lauzon had amassed to 13 victories before the UFC found him, 11 of which coming by submission. However, the opponent standing across from him in the octagon was none-other than former UFC lightweight champion, Jens Pulver, the man responsible for handing B.J. Penn his first professional MMA defeat. Pulver left the UFC in 2002, and following mixed success with a number of organisations in U.S.A and Japan, he returned once more, meeting a then 22-year-old Joe Lauzon, and although J-Lau was a heavy underdog, his early takedowns and relentless pressure was rewarded when his knee stunned Pulver, dropping him before he finished it on the ground. Not only did Lauzon leave California with his hand raised, he left the entire MMA community in a state of shocked admiration, as he handed Jens Pulver his first UFC defeat.
