8. Rear Naked Choke
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4q3kd8yeVPw Perhaps one of the most common submission moves in the UFC and, indeed, across all MMA divisions. Whilst visually a rear naked choke looks exceptionally traditional and somewhat bland compared to the more exuberant attacks, the results are consistently devastating and never does it seem to lose its power. The fighter attempting the move will stand or sit behind their challenger and anchor their arm under the neck, supporting the lock by using their weight to press it down. Squeezing like a boa constrictor, the move gets tighter and more eye-poppingly painful as the blood slowly stops circulating to the brain, sending the recipient into a state of unconsciousness. The more they struggle - just like the snake's killing method - the more oxygen they exhale and, consequently, make the finish a simpler job for the choker. It is a simple but entirely efficient submission that is made all-the-more damaging because so many UFC fighters take their chances with it; hanging on for minutes caught in a rear naked choke is not bigger nor clever.
