Gonzalez made just two Premier League substitute appearances for the Magpies and made little-to-no impact at the club, despite enjoying productive spells at Monaco, Standard Liege and Levante. A player Kevin Keegan didn't want was also unfancied by Joe Kinnear, Chris Hughton and Alan Shearer, meaning Gonzalez departed Tyneside as one of the worst signings in the club's history.
