10 Most-Pointless Newcastle Signings In The Premier League Era

7. Ronny Johnsen

Newcastle United: 2004-05 Nationality: Norwegian Position: Defender Signed: July 2004 Fee: Free Transfer (Aston Villa) Appearances (Goals): 5 (0) While at Manchester United, Johnsen claimed four Premier League titles, the FA Cup, the FA Charity Shield, the Intercontinental Cup and, of course, the UEFA Champions League - yet the defender made just five appearances during his brief spell on Tyneside. Signed on a free transfer from Aston Villa in the summer of 2004, Johnsen was struck down by a series of injury problems during the entirety of his stay at St James' Park - and retired in February 2005 after failing to fully recover his fitness. Five appearances and no goals for the 62-cap Norway defender prove that things didn't go well for Johnsen at Newcastle, but he came out of retirement just months later to join Norwegian side Valarenga. Undoubtedly a class centre-back in his day yet Newcastle decided to sign Johnsen up even though he could barely run by 2004.
