10 Most Successful Formula One Constructors Of All Time
3. McLaren
In terms of race wins, McLaren is the second best team in Formula One history. Originally started by former F1 driver, Bruce McLaren, the McLaren team have consistently won Grands Prix and challenged for the title over the years (at least until recently). Their consistency is so impressive that they have won Consructors' Championships in the '70s, '80s & '90s.
Gaining their first championship in 1974, thanks to Emerson Fittipaldi, it would take another 10 years before they won again. That particular one came courtesy of Nikki Lauda and Alain Prost, and it would start a period of domination for the team that lasted until 1991.
Their domination would reach its zenith in 1988, where, with Honda turbo power and a driver lineup of Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost, McLaren won all but one race throughout the season. When Prost left the team in 1990, Senna was free to take back-to-back driver's titles in 1990 and 1991 and McLaren took the Constructors' crown at the same time.
The early '90s saw a drop in success. However, by the end of the '90s, McLaren formed another dominant partnership with Mercedes leading to two driver's titles for Mika Hakkinen and one Constructors' Championship for the team. To date, this is the last Constructors' Championship the team has won. In that time Lewis Hamilton has won the driver's title with the team, but they surrendered the Constructors' to bitter rivals Ferrari in controversial fashion.
