The Man has often been called the best motocross rider of all time, and is certainly the most successful of the sports first 50 years. DeCosters list of accomplishments are staggering. The Belgian, born in Uccle on August 28, 1944, managed to win five 500cc Motocross World Championships, 36 500cc Motocross Grand Prix victories, was a member of six winning Belgium Motocross des Nations teams, earned four Trans-AMA Motocross Championships, was a Gold Medalist in the International Six Day Trial, and earned numerous national championships in his native Belgium, including a national Trials title. DeCosters versatility, speed, and technical approach to the sport made him the perfect ambassador for motocross on its arrival in America. In the Trans-AMA series DeCoster dominated against top Grand Prix and American riders, winning the Championship four years running, from 1974 to 1977. He quickly became a popular figure in the States, and would be possibly the most influential rider on American motocross today. Not only did his early ventures to the States inspire an entire generation of riders, but his continued support of the growing sport was a key ingredient in the success of American motocross in years to come, through his work with team Honda and the American Motocross des Nations team. Not only did he advise the Honda team, creating what is perhaps one of the most dominant eras for a manufacturer in the sports history during the mid to late eighties, he led the Americans to their first Motocross des Nations victory in 1981. They would soon become the most dominant nation in motocross. DeCoster continues to push the sport, achieving success in whatever position he may be. Most recently, his position at KTM has helped lead to their rise to the top of American motocross competition. DeCoster was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1999.
