10 Newcastle Heroes Whose Careers Nosedived Since Leaving
7. Sebastien Bassong
It may have been a dismal season that resulted in an ignominious relegation to the Championship, but if there was one shred of light in a bleak tunnel for Newcastle supporters it was the form of the find of the season - Sebastien Bassong, whose only experience of professional football had been 79 games in the second tier of French football. Remarkably, it was £10 million-rated former AC Milan centre-half Fabricio Coloccinis incompetence that brought about the problems at the back, with the 23 year old Bassong looking far more assured and composed. Of course, Bassongs loyalty did not match his ability and he was one of the first to jump ship when relegation was confirmed, completing an £8 million move to Spurs. Although his career at White Hart Lane got off to the perfect start, bagging the winner against Liverpool, he quickly fell down the pecking order at Spurs and made a total of 45 league appearances during his three seasons at the club. He has since suffered two more relegations - once on loan at Wolves in 2012 and another last season with Norwich City - and currently finds himself out of favour at Carrow Road. His potential top-flight career looks to be in tatters, with Norwich manager Neil Adams deeming him not good enough and having sent him out on loan to Watford.
