10 Newcastle Players Who Became Legends In One Moment

9. Lee Clark's SMB T-Shirt

Lee Clark was already a fan favourite during his first spell at Newcastle: he was another local lad done good from the authentic hotbed of Walker, and his commitment to the team cause went without question. The sight of him in full flight down the wing was a glorious thing, even if he was never quite as appreciated in that period as he should have been: it was his role in central midfield that underpinned the success of 1995/96, and it was only when he was replaced with David Batty that things started to go badly. But then in 1997 he was out of favour and unthinkably moved to Sunderland - albeit with the rare blessings of the fans - helping them into the play-offs in 1998 and then into the Premier League in 1999. Sadly for Sunderland fans - and to the glee of all Newcastle fans - he then went to the FA Cup Final in 1999 to watch Newcastle play Man Utd, with a group of fellow fans, and was given an SMB t-shirt to put on. Naturally he did for photos, which then leaked to the papers and basically ended his Sunderland career. By then though he was definitely a Newcastle legend.
