10 Notable Absentees From England’s World Cup Squad
5. Nathaniel Clyne
It doesn't seem like that long ago that Nathaniel Clyne was one of England's most exciting full-backs, but the former Southampton and Crystal Palace man hasn't actually turned out for the Three Lions since 2016. In his place, fellow Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has been called up, despite never appearing for England before, and it remains to be seen if this risky pick will pay off.
A big injury left Clyne out of action for most of the latest Premier League season, but he did have an outside chance of making the squad after finally pulling on a Liverpool shirt again and playing in a few games over the last few weeks.
Some great players miss large parts of the season but still end up getting picked for international tournaments because of past successes, but Gareth Southgate has put a lot of emphasis on his philosophy of only picking players who are in form and playing regularly, so Clyne's hopes of going to Russia were never much more than a pipe dream.
