Ryan Bertrand played a big part in England's qualifying campaign for the 2018 World Cup and will probably be feeling very disappointed to not have been called up for the finals. Southgate said that choosing not to take the Southampton full-back was one of the toughest decisions he had to make, but explained that the full-backs he settled on had been more impressive over the course of the domestic season.

Bertrand has been ever-present for Southampton this season, contributing with four assists in the Premier League as the Saints narrowly avoided relegation. At 28 years of age, he would have been one of the Three Lions' most experienced players, had he been chosen.

Instead, he'll be watching the games on TV like the rest of us. Bertrand hasn't been as impressive as Manchester United's Ashley Young, but could be aggrieved to see Danny Rose, who has only played in 10 league games for Tottenham, selected ahead of him.
