10 Of The Best: Foreign Palace Players

1. Attilio Lombardo

Attilio Lombardo joined Palace in 1997 after an unsuccessful stint at Italian giants Juventus. The winger, who made his name at previous club Sampdoria, would probably never had imagined in a million years that when he signed for Juventus, his next move would be to the Crystal Palace and (probably) Ikea on the Purley Way. His lack of form and previous injuries mattered not one bit to the Palace fans as bald wig sales in South London went through the roof in anticipation of his debut against Everton where, of course, he scored. The 'Bald Eagle's' fine form for the Eagles was rewarded with a recall to the international side with Palace sitting pretty in 10th place in the league. However, he picked up a serious injury and would miss most of the rest of the season and by the time he returned, the club had sunk to to the bottom of the league. Perhaps strangest of all, Palace were taken over by Mark Goldberg during the season and the 31 year old midfielder was suddenly thrust into the manager's position along side Thomas Brolin in what was the start of a calamitous time in charge for the new chairman. Relegation followed and despite deciding to stay and help Palace get promotion, he was eventually sold to Lazio to raise funds as Palace plunged into administration.
