10 Players Who Didn't Fulfil Their Potential At Liverpool
9. Anthony Le Tallec
Le Tallec arrived at Anfield in the summer of 2003 - though the club actually signed him in 2001 but loaned him back to Le Havre for two seasons - as a hugely exciting 18-year-old. The Frenchman had been voted the second best player at the Under-17 World Cup and had also impressed at the Under-16 European Championship prior to that, and it was fair to say that much was expected of the attacking midfielder. Sadly though, he found it very tough to break into Houllier's first-team in his first season at the club, with the likes of Steven Gerrard, Danny Murphy and Vladimir Smicer, among others, ahead of him in the pecking order. He scored what would prove to be his only ever goal for Liverpool in a UEFA Cup clash against the mighty Olimpija Ljubljana of Slovenia in late 2003, and other than as a poor footnote in Liverpool's last most successful period, that's about all he's memorable for. Le Tallec's only other real moment of note in a Reds shirt came during their unforgettable march to Champions League glory in 2004/05, when he played a part in Luis Garcia's unforgettable strike against Juventus in the quarter-finals. That was as good as it got though, and having been deemed surplus to requirements by Benitez he was shipped out on loan to Saint-Etienne, Sunderland, Sochaux and Le Mans, before joining the latter on a permanent basis in 2008. He made a total of just 32 appearances for Liverpool.
