10 Players Who Didn't Fulfil Their Potential At Liverpool
8. Fernando Morientes
When Morientes arrived on Merseyside in January 2005 much was expected of him: he had been a top-class striker for Real Madrid throughout their 'Galactico' era, scoring 96 times in 226 appearances, and at 28 he should have been in his prime. He was seen as the man to come in and guarantee quality up front, with the likes of Milan Baros and Djibril Cisse failing to deliver goals on a consistent basis, but that proved somewhat over-optimistic. Perhaps it didn't help matters that the Spaniard was cup-tied for Liverpool's incredible Champions League triumph - he had already represented Madrid earlier that season - but he simply never hit the heights expected of him at Anfield. A terrific goal against Charlton Athletic in his fourth game for the club suggested he was starting to find some form, but he ended up registering just three strikes in 15 appearances that season. In 2005/06 Morientes was given plenty of first-team opportunities, appearing 45 times in all competitions, but again he was extremely disappointing, finding the net just 9 times and barely affecting one big game during his time at Anfield. Ultimately, he was solid to Valencia in the summer of 2006, having made no impact on the Premier League at all, and the fact that Peter Crouch became a more important player than him sums it up really, with no disrespect to the former England striker.
