10 Players Who Didn't Fulfil Their Potential At Spurs

7. David Bentley

David Bentley joined Spurs for £15 million, from Blackburn Rovers, when he was a 23 year old promising England international. He had a reputation for being a good goalscorer, a solid set-piece taker and a crosser in the mould of David Beckham - a set of traits that led many to call him "the next David Beckham", in fact. But that was not to be. His form severely dipped at Spurs and he offered nothing to justify his fee. One 43 yard dipping volley against one of his former clubs €“ and Spurs€™ bitter North London rivals Arsenal €“ was a highlight, but even that wasn't enough to say that his time at White Hart Lane was anything other than a massive disappointment.

He was loaned out four times €“ to then fellow Premier League side Birmingham City, West Ham United when they were playing in the Championship, Russian side FC Rostov and Blackburn Rovers - his previous club. He failed to impress on any of those spells and he was released by Spurs on the 7th of June in 2013.

After struggling to find a new club, Bentley retired a year later on the 13th of June in 2014. He has said that the reason behind his retirement is that he had fallen out of love with football but, really, he had no choice €“ nobody wanted him. It really is hard to believe that Spurs spent £15 million on him and he offered them nothing.
