10 Players You Didn't Know Chelsea Almost Signed

5. David Silva

In 2010, David Silva was on the radar of near enough all the top Premier League sides and seriously flirted with a move to Chelsea. Silva was at Valencia at the time but was on the verge of quitting Spain for England and dropped a huge hint that he wanted to move to Stamford Bridge when his stay in La Liga ended. He was quoted as saying:
In players like John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba, they have players who would get into any team in the world and it would be a pleasure to play with them. There is no doubt in my mind that Chelsea would be a great club to play for €“ and a club where I could fulfill my ambition of league titles and the European Cup.
However, despite these flirtations, Silva would later reject a bid from the Blues in favour of a move to Manchester City instead, who were beginning to assert themselves as one of English football's most dominant club teams following their takeover in 2008. Chelsea had been tracking Silva for up to a year before making their failed bid, and have had to watch on with envy as he has starred at the Etihad.
