10 Players You Didn’t Know Liverpool Almost Signed

4. Diego Costa

Liverpool didn't get up to much in the previous couple of transfer windows, but that wasn't for want of trying. Last summer we lost out big time when we just missed out on signing Atletico Madrid forward Diego Costa, our bid of £21 million rejected outright by the Spanish side. The Brazilian player has since signed another contract with Madrid, but apparently he did seriously consider a change of scenery over at Anfield. That amount should have reportedly triggered the release clause in the 24-year-old's contract, which was handy because at the same time we were worried a £40 million bid on Luis Suarez would cause a similar likelihood of our star forward running off to bite people under the command of Arsene Wenger. As it happens, Suarez stayed put, and Costa did too, the latter putting his decision down not to money but to how hard he'd fought for a place at Atletico and how it'd be a shame to waste it. Also, money.
