10 Players Ian Cathro Could Bring With Him To Newcastle
10. Ryan Gauld
The future of Scottish football. Ian Cathro is the man who discovered Gauld at Dundee United, helping him into The Terrors' first team. After 50 appearances and nine goals, the attacking midfielder, who was nicknamed the mini Messi during his time at Tannadice, caught the attention of Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon who were willing to part with over £3 million for the then 18-year-old's services. After a spell in their B team, Gauld broke through into the 18-time Portuguese Champion's first team last season, making five appearances and scoring two goals. For a midfielder he certainly seems to know where the goal is... There's little doubting that Newcastle will have to part with significantly more than the £3 million Sporting paid for Gauld over a year ago now, but in Cathro, they certainly have someone who could twist the talented boy's arm and get him to St James' Park. Gauld has gone on record stating how much of an influence United's new assistant had on him. Speaking to The Guardian, the Scotland U21 international told of how Cathro's guidance and knowledge of passing technique set him apart from the rest of the pack.
That was something I worked on in training with Ian Cathro, Gauld explained. He was always saying that you need to see not just the pass that you are going to play but when that person receives the ball, think of what they can do with it, so thinking of the second and the third pass. A lot of nights of the week we would just work on awareness, just knowing whats about you. Its a key part of my game.
