Newcastle United prides itself on its local lads, even if they're few and far between these days. Steven Taylor has been with the club for 19 years, and his passion for the city courses right through his veins, as the old cliche does, if one were to cut him open, he would bleed black and white that is after rolling around on the ground as if he was taken out with a sniper, of course. However, there comes a time when sentimental value must be abandoned and common sense must prevail. Since this has finally proven to be the summer Shola Ameobi gets the bullet from the clubs hierarchy, perhaps the time is come to put down another Toon cult favourite. Supporters have grown disgruntled with Taylors sloppy displays in recent times, and he himself has become frustrated at the lack of football he has seen. For a 28 year old centre-half to have played only 195 league games in ten years for the club is not a welcoming statistic. It feels like an age since he formed a reliable alliance with Coloccini at the heart of the defence in late 2011, and not so long ago that he was foolishly dismissed on the opening day of last season for a wayward elbow against Man City. If Yanga-Mbiwa is given his marching orders, then it is worth keeping the Toon old boy around, but if not, then surely we can do better than Ryan Taylors namesake.
