Chelsea have only themselves to blame. Juan Sebastian Veron may have been one of the finest midfield technicians in European football at the time, but he was simply a case of somebody who simply couldnt adjust to the speed, rhythm and lack of time on the ball in the Premier League. Its not like Chelsea had no forewarning, having watched the Argentine flounder at Old Trafford for two seasons, following a blockbuster £28.1 million move from Italian giants Lazio in 2001. However, it was simply a case of owner Roman Abramovich having more money than sense when he assumed paying a cut-price fee of £15 million for the Manchester United flop two years later was a good idea. While it was clear for all to see that it wasnt working out in Manchester, it was still a slight surprise to see Ferguson admit his costly mistake after just two years and agree to sell him to a potential rival for the league title. With Veron insisting that he wanted to stay and prove his worth at Old Trafford, he was eventually persuaded by Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri to join the Blues revolution in a bid to get his flailing career back on track. Injury problems and poor form combined to hamper his time at Stamford Bridge, limiting him to just 15 appearances in his sole season at the club, before incoming boss Jose Mourinho shipped him back to Italy.
