It wasnt a transfer that ripped the roof off White Hart Lane, but it was certainly one that caused screams of fury to emanate out of Melwood training ground. Liverpool had been strenuously courting Fulham and USA goal machine Clint Dempsey for the duration of the 2012 summer transfer window, with the forward even going on strike at Craven Cottage in a bid to force through a move. Liverpool were even prepared to offload £20 million-rated Jordan Henderson as a makeweight in a potential deal for the US hot-shot. In the end, Fulham were forced to report the Reds to the FA for tapping up their star player, leading to the Merseyside club issuing a grovelling apology four months after the transfer window had closed. By then, however, Dempsey was neither a Fulham nor a Liverpool employee. Spurs had truly come out of the blue to swoop for the US hit-man on transfer deadline day, wrapping up a £6 million deal. It came as such a surprise simply because nobody saw them coming - indeed, with the likes of Emmanuel Adebayor, Jermain Defoe and Harry Kane, Spurs looked well-stocked with regards to attacking options.
''To play under this head coach and play for this club is a dream come true. I want to make the most of it. There are lot of great players here. Im looking forward to training and playing with them. - Clint Dempsey, August 2012.
