5. Ronaldo

DANIEL OCHOA DE OLZA/AP/Press Association Images Long before Cristiano, plain old Ronaldo was the poster boy of Real Madrid, with the Brazilian scoring 83 goals in 127 appearances to go down as a club legend at the Santiago Bernabeu. He might have wished he'd stayed a bit longer instead of joining Milan in 2007. Following the end of a hugely-successful five-year stint at Madrid, Ronaldo completed a transfer to Milan, but despite the tantalizing prospect of playing alongside the likes of Kaká and Alexandre Pato in a devastating trifecta dubbed
Ka-Pa-Ro, the move was an unmitigated disaster. In February 2008, Ronaldo suffered a season-ending knee injury after rupturing a ligament, and the forward was then released by Milan at the end of the season, bringing to an end his forgettable 12 month stay in the Italian capital. Real had originally been reluctant to sell Ronaldo, who had to buy his way out of his contract to force through his move to Milan. Had he stayed in Madrid, he may have found the Spaniards more patient as he battled through his injury nightmare.
