The Columbian superstar realised his dream move this summer by sealing a £71 million move to Real Madrid, following a sensational World Cup outing in which he bagged the Golden Boot as Columbia reached the quarter-finals. However, the Bernabeus latest Galactico almost had a very different career trajectory, and whose to say if this path would have taken him to club of his heart? It was back in the summer of 2010 when Manchester United were offered the opportunity to sign the Columbian playmaker - then an 18 year old hot-shot at Argentine side Club Atletico Banfield - for as little as £5 million. Senior officials at United did not respond to the offer, however, and instead stumped up £7.4 million for unknown quantity Bebe. Realising their mistake, but evidently not quite enough, they would sound him out three years later while at FC Porto, only to baulk at the £30 million price-tag. However, with Rodriguez no doubt living in a luxurious Spanish villa, surrounded by world-class superstars every time he steps out onto the pitch, and vying for trophies on all fronts, there is probably not a twinge of regret at how his career has panned out in the slightest.
