This case had similarities with the Alan Shearer quandary, only it was the subtle differences that allowed Thomas Muller not to have to think hard about a decision at all. In Mullers case, Bayern Munich are his hometown team and it would be torturous to tear himself away from a club that he has been rooted in for the last 14 years of his life. The differences between Newcastle United and Bayern Munich, however, are vast in that the Bavarian trophy cabinet is bulging with pieces of silverware while the Tynesides efforts from the last half-century could easily fit into a drawer. The Manchester United that attempted to woo Germanys prolific marksman were a sickly, pale imitation of the dominant behemoth of Shearers era, with the club still trying to recover from Sir Alex Fergusons retirement. With Bayern enjoying one of the most successful periods in their footballing history, and with Muller at the forefront of it, there was no way the World Cup winner was going to quit, and especially not for a side without even the minimum requirement of Champions League football.
''I know there was interest, but Man United were interested in a lot of players this summers. It never really got anywhere, because I had just renewed my contract, and Bayern were clear that they saw my future here. The decision for me was an easy one. - Thomas Mueller, September 2014.
