10 Players Sir Alex Ferguson Was Completely Wrong About

1. Juan Sebastian Veron

If you're wondering just how poor a judgment it was to sign Juan Sebastian Veron, you need only look at the 50 worst transfers in the history of the Premier League list by The Times. Veron became the most expensive player in British football history when he completed his £28.1 million move from Lazio to Manchester United in 2001 €“ but left the club with his reputation in tatters.

The South American had difficulty adjusting to the fast-paced nature of the English Premier League, where he was not afforded the time on the ball he had been accustomed to in Italy, and scored just seven goals in 51 appearances for the club. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson came to his defence on a number of occasions €“ notoriously with his foul-mouthed tirade against the player€™s critics €“ in which he blasted:

"He is a f***ing great player. And you're all f***ing idiots."

Even by Ferguson's standards this is a remarkable outburst. If Veron was a great player, he certainly didn't show it in England. He was sold to Chelsea after just two seasons and again flattered to deceive at Stamford Bridge, where he fell away with injury problems and made only 15 appearances for the Blues.
