Arriving as part of a promising Spurs trio, Pascal Chimbonda's heart was never really in it. Unlike fellow signing Steed Malbranque, who would go on to become a much-loved figure in the Sunderland midfield, the French journeyman cut a lonely figure at right back. After plodding through 13 unmotivated games for the Black Cats, he was sent straight back to White Hart Lane in a deal which reportedly recouped Sunderland's transfer losses. In hindsight, it's absolutely no surprise that Chimbonda never gave his all for the club. Something of a mercenary, he once described Wigan as a "stepping stone" to the higher reaches of the league (and was unsurprisingly sold with haste).
