A controversial selection this one, considering he's a current member of the club, but rarely has Sunderland seen a frotman quite as incompetent as Jozy Altidore. A centrepiece of Paolo Di Canio's summer spending spree, Altidore arrived from the Dutch Eredivisie as a feared goalscorer. This reputation would be quickly forgotten amid a storm of woeful first touches, horrendous hold-up play, and some dreadful, dreadful misses in front of goal. Despite this, Altidore has become something of an ironic cult hero on Wearside. He's unquestionably bad, but the clear effort he puts in has endeared himself to the masses. "When Jozy scores / We're on the pitch" chants started cropping up in the final games of last season. Stadium of Light stewards had nothing to fear.
