When Gary Breens wage demands rose too high for his previous club, Coventry City, West Ham took advantage (or disadvantage) of this by signing him for free once he was released at the end of his contract. He was given a one year deal with the possibility of extending it providing the Hammers avoided relegation, however, through his calamitous defensive partnership with Christian Dailly, he helped ensure that wasnt the case and made a swift exit shortly after. This was of course the infamous season in which the best team ever to be relegated was in fact relegated. A team that included the likes of: Paolo Di Canio, Jermaine Defoe, Michael Carrick, Glen Johnson, Joe Cole and Frederic Kanoute; any one of these players could have been accused of stealing their living that year, after a series of awful performances saw West Ham demoted to the Championship. Based on the nature of Gary Breens arrival, however, combined with his sorry excuse for defending, he found himself as one of the main culprits in his only year with the Hammers.
