10 Players You Totally Forgot Played For Southampton

3. Peter Reid

Currently managing the likes of Freddie Ljungberg and Nicolas Anelka at the newly formed Mumbai City in the Indian Super League, Reid is best remembered for the seven years he spent as a player at Everton and in more recent times for the seven years he spent as manager of Sunderland. At Everton Reid enjoyed the peak of his career in 1985, awarded the PFA Player of the Year as the Toffees won the League and Cup Winners' Cup. He is considered one of the club's all time great players and when he left, at the age of 33 in 1989, his playing career was already winding down. His move to Manchester City in 1990 had soon kick started his managerial career as he spent three years as the club's player-manager. In between being fired as City manager and quitting playing completely before being hired as Sunderland manager, however, Reid fit in a brief three month spell at Southampton. Signed by struggling manager Ian Branfoot in desperation in October 1993, the 37 year old midfielder had all but given up playing. He managed eight appearances for Saints before Branfoot was fired at the beginning of January and Reid swiftly followed him out of the door.
