10 Players Who Turned Down Big Moves To Join Newcastle

9. Sylvain Marveaux - Liverpool

When Loic Remy's move to Liverpool failed spectacular at the last moment with claims of a failed medical (and counter-claims of financial brinksmanship from the player), Newcastle fans could be forgiven for seeing an emerging pattern. After all, not three years previously, the Anfield side had issued a statement claiming that another Frenchman had failed a medical and wouldn't be signing for the club, only for the player to react angrily in response. That player was Sylvain Marveaux, who had gone on to sign for Newcastle on a free from Rennes without any medical hiccups, strangely enough. Understandably annoyed that Liverpool had attempted to paint him in a potentially destructive manner, Marveaux countered with his own statement to L'Equipe, stating more frankly that he'd rejected Liverpool's personal terms and chosen instead to join Newcastle.
"I do not want to go into details, but if I did not sign for Liverpool, it was because there was a contractual disagreement between the parties on Thursday night."
Ultimately, Marveaux's time at Newcastle turned out to be a disappointment, mostly because the manager who greeted his signing as exciting couldn't fit him into his system, and tried to play him out of position too much. But still, it's nice to get anything over Liverpool after they've poached so many talents from Tyneside over the years.
