"Jose Enrique, we're in the top six". At that moment, on 2nd April 2012, when Jose Enrique deputised in goal for the dismissed Pepe Reina as Newcastle lead Liverpool 2-0 in a game that would see them move clear of their opponents in the race for Europe, the Spanish left back will have definitely regretted swapping Tyneside for Merseyside in the summer of 2011. Enrique had stated that he wanted to move to Kenny Dalglish's side to challenge at the top end of the table only to be left with egg on his face when his former club finished well above his new one.

The most frustrating part in this saga was his complete and utter refusal to commit at all for the previous season, making his exit inevitable and Newcastle fans feel alienated and disrespected, meaning people laughed extra hard at the former player on his first return to St James' Park. In fairness to him, that season he did lift the Carling Cup and since then under Brendan Rodgers, Liverpool have gone from strength to strength while Newcastle have completely gone the other way under Alan Pardew.

However, it was a great shame the way that Jose Enrique left Newcastle, having been such a consistent and elegant performer and helping the club get back on its feet during his four-year stay at the club. With injuries being so prominent, Enrique quickly fell out of favour at Liverpool and, after a brief stint at Real Zaragoza, he retired from the game.
