Like Francesco Totti, another player who had a huge connection with his hometown club was Steven Gerrard. He had, of course, come through the academy, helped them to win a number of trophies, including as captain in one of the most memorable Champions League finals in recent history against AC Milan in 2005.

However, his part in the glory of Liverpool’s fifth European Cup/Champions would’ve been non-existent had Real Madrid and, particularly, Zinedine Zidane had their way.

Gerrard later spoke to the Mirror and confirmed said interest:

“I had a couple of options throughout my career to go to Madrid but I resisted the temptation because of the big connection I had to my hometown club.”

He also revealed that was not prepared to be party to “a war” between Real Madrid and Liverpool.

Zidane later verified the approach, saying it was his desire to play alongside the Englishman at Los Merengues.

“I think it was in the summer of 2004 when I had a conversation with Florentino Perez and I him that I wanted Gerrard to partner me in midfield.”

He concluded “I know the club tried twice but he wouldn’t leave Liverpool. Not many people turn down Real Madrid but I think this tells you about the loyalty of the man.”
