Before Arsenal came calling, Mathieu was linked with the Blues whilst at Marseille. Ironically enough he made his debut for the Gunners against Everton in a 4-1 thumping at Goodison in 2004. This the same year he was linked with the Merseysider's. Flamini has had a great career with two spells at Arsenal and one with AC Milan. In hindsight his talent would not have gone unnoticed for long at Everton but what a fine addition he'd have made. Marseille could not afford to keep him after his success in midfield during their run to the Uefa Cup final. It was Arsenal not Everton who swooped in for their man soon after.
