10 Premier League Record Signings Who Were A Waste Of Money
6. Pablo Dani Osvaldo
In 2013, Osvaldo was one of the best strikers in Serie A and making a name for himself at Roma. In the final of the Coppa Italia however, he allegedly made unsavoury comments towards caretaker manager Aurelio Andreazzoli, effectively ending his time at the club. After a 7 year absence from the Premier League, Southampton Football Club strengthened significantly in 2012 and looked to do the same ahead of the next campaign in 2013. After initially breaking their record transfer fee to sign defensive midfielder Victor Wanyama from Celtic, they broke it once again to capture the controversial Osvaldo for £15M. In 13 games he scored 3 goals, got fined £40,000, banned for three matches and was suspended for two weeks after instigating a training ground fight with teammate Jose Fonte. Not quite the impact they had in mind when they signed him. At times he showed brilliance, but ultimately Osvaldo failed to do anything noteworthy in the short space of time he was at the club and left on-loan to Juventus in the January transfer window, reportedly willingly taking a pay-cut to join.
