10 Problems Only Newcastle United Fans Will Understand
10. Not Winning A Trophy Since 1969
Its been 45 years since Newcastle won the Inter-Continental Fairs Cup against Hungarian outfit jpesti Dózsa, having played a first leg in front of 60,000 fans at St. James Park. After a goalless first half, Bob Moncur managed to score 2 inside of 10 minutes and the final blow was dealt by Jim Scott making it 3-0 at full time giving the Magpies a 3 goal advantage coming into the next game. The next leg was played at the Megyeri úti Stadium in Budapest, Hungary. With the 37,000 fans in the stands, jpesti Dózsa managed to almost close the gap, leading by 2 goals at the break. But whatever manager Joe Harvey said in his half-time team talk must have been inspirational as the lads came out all guns blazing with with Bob Moncur and Benny Arentoft scoring 2 goals in the opening 5 minutes of the second half. In the 74th minute, Alan Foggon struck the back of the net only 60 seconds after leaving the sub's bench, hammering the final nail in the coffin for jpesti Dózsa with the match ending 3-2 (6-2 on aggregate). The team returned from Budapest with the trophy and by all accounts it sounded like a magical evening. Unfortunately like many Newcastle fans, you probably weren't alive to witness it.
