10 Problems Steve McClaren Must Address At Newcastle
2. Get The Best Out Of Last Season's Expensive Flops... And The Rest Of The Squad
Emmanuel Riviere (£6 million), Remy Cabella (£12 million) and even Siem de Jong (£6 million) endured disastrous debut seasons in England - and McClaren must get more out of them in 2015-16. Ensuring he can field De Jong for more than just a handful of appearances should help because the Dutch international midfielder is a class act. If De Jong is fit, he will contribute goals and assists to a Newcastle team that has looked desperately short of ideas in the final third in recent months. Their two French imports meanwhile need a stroke of luck. Riviere has looked good in all areas except in front of goal, so if McClaren can give him some confidence and actually play him as a left forward as the Frenchman wants then hopefully there will be much more to come from the ex-Monaco man. The same can be said of Cabella, who enjoyed his best spell at Newcastle in January when he was played just behind the frontline as a central playmaker. Against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge he was outstanding for 45 minutes - and if McClaren can get that same level of performance from the former Montpellier midfielder on a consistent basis then he will have a real star on his hands. What's more, McClaren must look at the likes of Tim Krul, Fabricio Coloccini, Cheick Tiote - and others - and find some way of motivating them and of demanding better performances. That squad had enough quality to finish higher than the 15th place it ended last season in. McClaren must harness that.
