1. Clarify The Club's Position On The Domestic Cups
Newcastle United supporters want nothing more than the club to go on a cup run next season and McClaren must seek to clarify owner Mike Ashley's comments that he intends to "win something" with the Magpies. Ashley insisted that qualifying for the Champions League would count as "winning something", but that is merely a pipe dream and Newcastle must make it clear whether or not they will have a real tilt at either the FA Cup of Capital One Cup next season. McClaren must lay out his position from the beginning and be honest about whether or not he will target a repeat of his League Cup success with Middlesbrough in 2004. The club have said in the past that cup runs negatively affect a Premier League side's finishing position in the table but, after narrowly avoiding relegation last season, they can no longer use that as an excuse. If McClaren was to win something on Tyneside he would immediately go into Toon folklore - and he must make that his utmost priority while at the club.
