10 Reasons Luis Suarez Is Irreplacable At Liverpool

5. The Spurs Debacle

Last season, the impending sale of Gareth Bale had sent Daniel Levy€™s Spurs into a tizzy, chucking vast amounts of cash at several players, in a vain bid at improving the squad. If Spurs were the one-man team that the media loved to portray them as, then surely buying a whole new starting XI was surely the answer. Seven new players were all coaxed through the door, with four of them smashing what had been the club€™s previous transfer record €“ a modest £16.5 million for Darren Bent in 2007. £30 man million Erik Lamela, having cost almost a third of the Welshman€™s sizeable transfer fee, barely contributed, spending most of his time nursing calf strains on the sidelines. Brazilian midfield anchor Paulinho spent a rather anonymous season, struggling for a starting berth, with his hefty £17 million price tag often under scrutiny. With the new arrivals€™ debut seasons having ultimately finished in a disappointing sixth position, and all but Christian Eriksen deemed as flops so far, it should serve as a warning to Liverpool what can happen when a director of football suddenly comes into a large sum of money.
