10 Reasons The "Fight Of The Century" Was Anything But

2. Even Boxing Fans Are Peeved

Following the fight (and even during) boxing fans across social media began voicing their displeasure with the event, accusing Mayweather of running away and doing everything he could to avoid engaging.

For the supposed Fight of the Century, that's not the sort of reaction you want from your hardcore fan base.

Mayweather memes now include the one posted above, a photoshop of him as Forrest Gump (Run Mayweather Run!) and several others, none of which paint the fighter or fight itself in a flattering light.

Again, there's something to be said for the art of defensive boxing, but when it gets to the point that a bout is all defense, there's an issue. Refs really need the ability to penalize a fighter for not engaging (something that can happen in mixed martial arts, though it is rarely done).

In any case, if you're going to label something as the Fight of the Century, it has to leave fans praising it for weeks or months following the event - not mocking how bad it was.
