8. Meaningful Competition
I love football and I will watch pretty much any game that I can, but if there is one kind of football match that even I struggle with, it's a pointless international friendly. I persevere like most football fans do with such games, probably more out of obligation to our nationality then actual enjoyment of the spectacle. Every time these friendlies come up it is an annoyance everyone, typically they will be pop up at the most inconvenient of times, just as the league season is getting in the swing of things it is disrupted because the national teams need to play in glamour friendlies that are of no use to anybody. These kind of games are doing nothing for the plummeting reputation of international football. Whenever an international break comes up it help reinforce a growing feeling that the international teams are getting in the way of the club sides and that supporters would much prefer to be watching a league game. Whilst overall I do not share in this feeling, I find it hard to argue against it when England are playing the likes of Brazil and Italy in friendlies which serve no real purpose. I would much prefer the chance to watch something more meaningful, and to be invested in my country's matches. Of course if The Home Internationals returned they would not be as prestigious as the World Cup or European Championships but they would be a hell of a lot more important than a pointless friendly, because the games would be derbies and the indivudal nations pride would be at stake. Although some may argue that the modern game is all about money as far as the fans are concerned there is nothing more important win, lose or draw than pride.
