It was a transfer which had some onlookers clutching their sides in fits of laughter, and only seemed to heighten the scale of the mirth when the Brazilian captained his country to a humiliating 7-1 defeat at the hands of Germany in an infamous World Cup semi-final that will never be forgotten. David Luiz had always been regarded as a brilliant technician of the football, but prone to calamitous errors, lack of concentration and poor decision-making at the heart of defence. As a result, he would only feature 19 times in the Premier League last season, the majority of those coming in midfield, with Mourinho favouring a more reliable partnership of John Terry and Gary Cahill. So, when PSG lodged a bid of £50 million for the afro-haired Brazilian in May, jaws quickly had to be removed from the floor of the Chelsea boardroom, before a swift yes was issued. It was an extraordinary piece of business for the clubs third-choice centre-back, with the transfer a record deal ever done for a defender. Onlookers simply couldnt believe that PSG had spent quite so much on the erratic defender, especially after some error-strewn performances in Brazil during the summer. Deciding against signing Real Madrid playmaker Angel Di Maria later in the summer for being too expensive, one would really have to question a transfer policy that says no to shelling out for the Champions League-winning top assister in La Liga, but a big fat yes to a bumbling third-choice centre-back who captained his country to their worst ever loss.
