10 Shocking Newcastle United Departures That No One Saw Coming

8. Dietmar Hamann (Sold To Liverpool In July 1999)

Dietmar Hamann only spent one season with Newcastle and the St James€™ crowd didn€™t really get to see the best of the German midfielder as he was surprisingly sold to Liverpool in July 1999.

After playing for Germany in the 1998 World Cup, he joined Newcastle United, managed at the time by Kenny Dalglish (who was sacked very soon after signing him) for £5.5 million. Hamann played in 31 matches and scored five goals and was extremely highly-rated by Newcastle fans.

The Reds signed Hamann for £8.5 million and he quickly became one of the best centre midfielders in world football, helping Liverpool to a Champions League title in 2005.
