10 Shocking Spurs Departures That Nobody Expected

6. Jermain Defoe

Jermain Defoe is something of a Spurs icon. The diminutive striker enjoyed two spells at White Hart Lane, making a total of 363 appearances and scoring 143 goals in the process €“ making him the club€™s fifth highest goalscorer of all time in all competitions (he is also the club's highest scoring player of all time in European competition) €“ but he moved to Canada, to play for Toronto FC in MLS, in January of 2014 for a fee of around £6 million in a move that shocked the world of football. Defoe was still very capable of playing in the Premier League - he was only 31 at the time and still very fit - and he was hoping to make Roy Hodgson's England squad for the World Cup in Brazil. That he would still expect to earn a World Cup place when playing in a much poorer league made the move even more surprising. The move was arranged months before it actually happened and the news was made public, but it was still very strange to see such a top player moving to a much smaller club when it finally happened.
