Once tipped as one of the hottest up-and-coming goalkeepers in Europe at PSV Eindhoven, it begs the question - why on earth has he spent the last six years wasting away on the Spurs bench? Having signed for £7.8 million in June 2008, he was part of the team who made Spurs' worst ever start to a Premier League campaign. With confidence within the camp low, his form became wayward and erratic, and was scapegoated for Juande Ramos' faltering tenure. Gomes finally gained a run of form under Harry Redknapp, as they marched towards a Champions League berth, but dodgy errors had still become something of a trademark for the Brazilian keeper. Redknapp finally had enough of the blunders and signed the altogether more reliable Brad Friedel, and Gomes was never given a look-in. Once Andre Villas-Boas signed French number one Hugo Lloris in 2012, there was no reprieve for the former PSV shot-stopper. That's not to say that Gomes just sat down on the bench and accepted it like a good boy. Following Redknapp's dismissal, he spoke of his surprise at his omission from the side, and exasperation at the club refusing to accept any of the three offers tabled for his services. He would later go on to accuse the former Hammers boss of not liking South Americans, and in particular Brazilians. In December 2013, Gomes once again launched an attack on the Spurs board for failing to let him quit the club, admitting that he 'always tried to leave but Tottenham have never helped me'. In the same interview, he also unhelpfully let it be known that current No.1 Hugo Lloris had been keen to quit the club following Villas-Boas' initial preference for Friedel upon his arrival. Gomes left the club this summer, and the Spurs PR team could finally breath a collective sigh of relief.
