10 Strangest Ever Spurs Signings

10. Pascal Chimbonda

Tony Marshall/EMPICS SportTony Marshall/EMPICS SportThe initial signing of Pascal Chimbonda in 2006 was fine. He was performing great for Wigan Athletic and was attracting the attention of a number of big clubs. However, after he was sold in 2008 by Juande Ramos, Harry Redknapp brought him back just six months later. It was very, very, very dramatic U-turn on the part of the club - especially given the fact that he wasn't the only person to return to the club around that time. In the space of a month at the start of 2009 (January 6th-February 2nd), Spurs re-signed no less than three former players who they had sold in the last year. Jermain Defoe re-signed from Portsmouth having only left White Hart Lane in the previous January, Robbie Keane re-signed from Liverpool having only joined the Anfield club in the previous July and Chimbonda re-signed from Sunderland who he had also joined in the previous July (interestingly, the trio would also be followed by the return of Younes Kaboul from Portsmouth a year later). This had everything to do with Harry Redknapp's appointment. The manager obviously didn't like what previous boss Juande Ramos had done in selling those players and, having been in charge of Defoe (and Kaboul) in particular in his previous job at Portsmouth, he opted to bring them home. In the cases of Keane and Defoe - they were Spurs icons and it was a shame when they were sold in the first place. In Chimbonda's case, he was sold because he wasn't all that great at Spurs, so re-signing him was just weird.
