10 Strangest Ever West Ham Signings

6. Paulo Futre

The quality of Paulo Futre was never in doubt when he made his way to Upton Park in the summer of 1996, but that isn't the strange part of his time with the Hammers. When Futre received his number 16 shirt ready for our first fixture at Arsenal he refused to play, demanding instead his familiar number 10 shirt. When he couldn't be granted that at such short notice he returned with a team of lawyers just days later. Following a series of negotiations, Futre eventually changed squad numbers with our then number 10, John Moncur, when he offered him - in an unbelievable move - a two week holiday at his villa in the Algarve.
