10 Sunderland Cult Heroes From The Premier League Era

2. Julio Arca

With Phillips and Quinn calling the shots and putting elite Premier League teams to the sword up front, it's sometimes easy to forget how outstanding the supporting cast really were. Julio Arca was brought in from Boca Juniors in 2000 and was a true fan favourite. He was the young, exciting talent who could trick his way past anybody. His mazy running and fancy footwork earned plaudits around the city and beyond, providing the efficient Sunderland side with some true beauty. While most of that excellent side departed upon relegation, Arca kept the faith and dominated the Championship, playing a huge role in raising Sunderland back to the top flight. Again they were relegated, and by this time he had to leave for his own career, but nobody could hold it against him. Arca enjoyed years with Middlesbrough while still living in Sunderland, before retiring and taking up a position with a local Sunday League side. He 'got' Sunderland and continues to hold a special place in the hearts of the fans.
