Oh, Tommy Tommy. Sunderland have an keen eye when it comes to snapping up goalkeepers fit for the Premier League. Costel Pantilimon, Vito Mannone, and Simon Mignolet are the latest three examples, but Thomas Sorensen got the ball rolling back in 1998. He was a reliable figure between the sticks, and oversaw a tremendous team at the turn of the Millennium, but while it can be difficult for goalkeepers to make one defining moment during their time with a club, Sorensen produced the perfect highlight to secure his name in Sunderland folklore. In 2001, young, aspiring 'keepers on Wearside would have been practicing with their friends in the park, and the ultimate dream scenario would be to save an Alan Shearer penalty at St. James' Park. Tommy Sorensen lived out that fantasy, denying the Newcastle legend from 12-yards, securing a famous 2-1 victory for Sunderland. That's not just cult hero level, that's supreme legend status right there.
