10 Surprising Revelations About Newcastle Players You'd Never Believe
5. Gazza Taught Mirandinha English... Sort Of
You really shouldn't trust Gazza to be sensible. When new signing Mirandinha asked Gazza to help him learn English at Newcastle, he was inevitably sent into a chip shop armed with the phrase Id like some hairy f****y, please.
''Gazza, he's a crazy boy. I remember my first game when we played against Norwich City. Inside the bus they brought us fish and chips and chicken and chips for us to eat after the game. The bus started to leave and Gazza told me to go over to Willie McFaul and tell him: 'Mr Willie, I am f***** starving.' I didn't know what it meant so I went to Mr Willie and said 'boss, I am f***** starving, I need to eat some food.' All the boys started to laugh with me. That was the first funny story but there were so many." - Mirandinha, May 2014.
And who would doubt it?
"The club did away with the translator in my second season though, and I managed to fend for myself. One person who helped me a lot was Gascoigne - he taught me all the swear words! Unfortunately I've lost contact with him and we haven't spoken for three years, since egis health started to worsen. I always try to see him when I go to England though." Mirandinha, April 2013.
This wasn't the first or last time Gazza got in trouble for swearing: in 1990 organisers of the World Cup TV coverage filmed each player mouthing his own name for the line-up screens. Gascoigne intend mouthed 'F***ing W***ker' and the BBC had to use it all the way through the tournament.
