10 Talented Newcastle Players Who Were Well And Truly Pardewed

5. Davide Santon

From the new Paolo Maldini to Newcastle's third choice left-back, behind Paul Dummett in a matter of years. Yes he is right footed, as every Newcastle fan over the age of 35 points out as if it's his gravest crime, and yes he was somewhat unpolished when he signed for Newcastle, but you don't earn that sort of comparison from someone as astute as Jose Mourinho without having something special about you. It is utter garbage to say that Paul Dummett is better than the Italian, whose positional sense and attacking play both strip the Geordie by absolute miles, and it is simply not true that opposition players exploit his right-footedness by taking him on on the outside. How many teams now play with old-fashioned wingers? Santon should be a lot closer to first choice than he is when he is fit, and the sorry fact is that when Newcastle do give up on one of their left-backs (3 is too many at any club) it will likely be him who is forced out.
